South Beach Food and Wine Festival
Wow! What a way to show off South Florida. We looked like the jewel we are on The Today Show Friday morning. Under the tents, you tasted fabulous food and wine and had only to turn your head to see fantastic white beach and the most gorgeous blue ocean.
Four of us were lucky to attend on Friday (open only to the trade) as guests of our wine purveyor. You'll be seeing some of the wines we tasted soon on our shelves. By the way, my partner (and sister), Jonnie, is the wine buyer. If you need advice or want to try to get your hands on something you've tasted elsewhere, she can help.
Our chef, Jay, volunteered for the entire event. He ran Stage A and worked with Emeril, Paula Deen, Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay, Tyler Florence, Guy Fieri, Martha Stewart and more. I can't remember them all. Great experience and great fun for a young chef!
Hey Tom -- I was born and raised here, as was my mother. And, I was fortunate to live in the Redland/Redlands for a few years. I knew whichever way I went with that one, someone would call me on it.

The Cult of the Big Green Egg
I wonder how many people out there are members? Grilling year round is one of the great things about living in South Florida. The Big Green Egg (BGE) is the best grill and smoker around. It's an odd looking grill, but cooks up fantastic food. Check out our display on the front porch, or stop by next Saturday when we'll be cooking up something delicious.
More about the BGE and some recipes later.
Got to run. Tomorrow's my day off and I've got to shop. One of the best perks of working at Norman Brothers is that you get to check out what's freshest and best and shop every day. We're still harvesting in The Redland, so check out the previous posts and you'll know what I'm taking home.

Eat Locally
I came upon an interesting item the other day. According to MN2020.org (a Minnesota think tank), when you spend $1.00 at a national chain an average of $0.43 stays in the community. Spend that dollar at a local independent, and $0.68 stays in the community.
This time of year our farms are producing snap beans, yellow squash and zucchini, pole beans, eggplant, wax beans, strawberries, and the list goes on. You can serve your family healthy nutritious fruits and veggies that are grown practically in our backyard.
Think globally, eat locally. It's good for the earth, it's good for the local economy and it's good for you.

Wine Tasting This Weekend
Stop by this Saturday, noon to 3:00pm, to try some of our new whites from Chile, and a delightful Pinot Noir from the Carmel Road label. Plus, we'll have a fun wine, the Albarino variety from Spain, grown and bottled at Palo & Lola.

The Farmer's Market
We urge our clients to "Think Globally, Eat Locally." Here's today's tip.
This morning our trucks were in The Redland early. Today's harvest includes sweet Strawberries and buttery Ermosa Lettuce (you may know it as Boston) from the Amish farm. Vine ripened tomatoes came from Kern Carpenter Farms.
I hope you've tried our Spring Onions in previous years. They're only available for a couple of months - a beautiful big, white, sweet onion with the top still on. They're from Pine Island Farms.
And how about Corn? It's at it's peak right now from Alger Farms in The Redland. It's so sweet you don't even need butter. However, you've got to try it our way. Parboil it, throw it on the grill for a few minutes and slather on some of Chef Jay's Chipotle Butter. You can skip the grilling step, but it certainly makes it special.
It's harvest time in The Redland. Won't you share it with us?

Valentines Day Dinner
A crowded restaurant, a long wait and surly waiters. Restaurant dining on Valentine's Day is NOT romantic.
If you really want to show your affection, why not whip up a fresh, home-cooked meal for your Valentine?
At Norman Brothers, you can have a romantic home cooked meal without getting your hands dirty! We'll do all the work, and you get all the praise. Choose stone crabs, salmon or stuffed lobster for example. Add your favorite vegetable, potato and pasta side dishes and just heat it up at home. serve in your own cookware and they'll think you cooked all afternoon.
Or, pick out homemade sides and fresh salads, choose some prime steaks and you're on your way. Just grill up the steaks and impress your dinner date.
Don't forget a bottle of wine from our huge wine department. And a dozen chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert.
